Kerry Painter Wins GBT Boardman Challenge

For Kerry Painter, pressure is just something you handle as it comes. The former air traffic controller handled it well in his first Generations Tour event against great bowlers like Dale Eagle, David Ozio and Mark Roth.

Painter, Henderson, Nevada is the third amateur in five weeks to win a Generations Bowling Tour event. Wednesday night here at Bob Smith’s Camelot Lanes in Boardman, Ohio, he defeated Dale Eagle 247-200 in the championship game to earn the $13,500 top prize. Eagle, for the third time in five weeks, took home the $8,800 runner-up check.

In the title match, Painter started with a strike, then left the 8-10 split in the second. Eagle doubled to start the game, then left a 4-pin in the third and missed the spare. Eagle opened again in the 7th, and Painter closed the match with a 6-bagger.

“My knees were shaking a little, but I did what I had to do,” said Painter. “I’m just ecstatic that I beat three of the legends of our game, Roth, Ozio, and Eagle to win this title. I’m hoping I can be an inspiration for the guys who haven’t come out here who may not think they are good enough to bowl against these guys. You just have to get into the lineup to have a shot at winning. Once you get there, if you can get loose, you have the advantage over the guy coming in, and I was fortunate to have that happen tonight,” he said.

“I tried two or three different things that didn’t work in the first match, so I just went to the high hard one and it worked pretty good until the last game,” said Eagle. “I’m a little disappointed in myself for missing those spares in the title game. That’s what cost me the match. You just can’t do that against these players,” he said.

In previous matches, Painter defeated David Ozio ($4,000) in the Senior division title match 214-179. Prior to that, he beat Dave Patchen ($1,450) 166-152 and Mark Roth ($2,000) 222-219.

In the Classic division, Eagle defeated Gary Dickinson ($1,350) 181-176, Chuck Pierce ($2,000) 224-195, and Vinnie Atria ($4,000) 238-180 prior to meeting Painter in the championship game.

Next week, the GBT moves to Brunswick Zone Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick, New Jersey for the sixth stop of its inaugural eight city fall swing. For more information visit the GBT website http://www.gbtour.com or call toll free 1-888-GBT-BOWL.
